Long ago, two children, a man and a woman, fell from the sky to Kouri Island, gradually acquired knowledge and began to live on the island, and their descendants grew to become the ancestors of the Ryukyuan people, in other words, the island is the origin of the islanders (shimanchu).
The island is said to have been called "Koijima" in the Okinawan myth of Adam and Eve, then Koijima, then Kuijima, then Korishima, and finally Korijima, and finally Kourijima.
